THE ENVIRONMENT OF ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA

Terrain

Hey!Did you know that the word Mesopotamia means “the land between two rivers”, because it is between the two rivers Euphrates and Tigris. The land does not have that much hills and mountains so it is flat like a plain. Most of Mesopotamia is covered by flood plain. Flood plains are things that push around dirt. Then the dirt gets ground up into fine sand or silt. This silt is very fertile so the land is easy to grow crops.

This is a picture of Mesopotamia’s flood plain.

Climate

The climate of Mesopotamia is and was very, very hot averaging at 110°f that is really hot. Because of this intense heat it melts snow that is on the mountains which carries water and floods. But the mountains still manage to get snow on them and remain cold. The rest of Mesopotamia isn't that lucky, they have less than 10 inches of rain a year. Imagine that!

The mountain's snow would melt and cause flooding

Agriculture

Did you know that the environment of ancient Mesopotamia enriched the agriculture? This is just one of the multiple ways: Mesopotamia lies on the Fertile Crescent. The Fertile Crescent is the place in-between the two rivers. These Rivers sent water into the soil so the land got irrigated. Because of this irrigation the land was fertile so crops and other things could grow and reproduce. That is why I think that the environment enriched agriculture.

The farm land of Mesopotamia has lots of marshes so water plants like rice grow there.

How ancient Mesopotamian’s destroyed the environment

The way ancient Mesopotamians destroyed the land was actually by agriculture (farming) and this is how this happened. They first started farming as I said. Then the salt from the production of the food leaked into the soil. So then all the crops died. Then the ground became non fertile and turned into sand and over time it turned into a desert. So right now there is a big difference between before and now. I think that this has changed our look on the world because now we know that we can not polute the world or we will live in desert.
